Becoming a U.S. Citizen: Naturalization Dreams Come True

Becoming a U.S. citizen through naturalization is one of the most meaningful milestones in an immigrant’s life. It gives you new rights and opportunities — like the ability to vote, apply for a U.S. passport, and fully participate in the country you now call home.

At Dinits Immigration Law, we guide you through each step of the naturalization process with clarity and care, making sure you understand what’s required and helping you prepare for success.

Who Can Apply for Naturalization

To qualify for citizenship, you’ll need to meet certain requirements set by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS):

  1. Age: You must be at least 18 years old when you apply.
  2. Permanent Resident Status: You must have a green card and have lived in the U.S. as a lawful permanent resident for at least five years — or three years if you’re married to a U.S. citizen.
  3. Continuous Residence: You must have lived continuously in the U.S. during that time. Long trips outside the country could interrupt this requirement.
  4. Physical Presence: You must have been physically present in the U.S. for at least half of your required residency period.
  5. Good Moral Character: You must have followed the law, paid your taxes, and shown honesty and integrity.
  6. English Skills: You’ll need to show that you can read, write, and speak basic English. Some people may qualify for exemptions based on age or medical conditions.
  7. Civics Knowledge: You must pass a short test about U.S. history, government, and your rights and responsibilities as a citizen.

Steps to Becoming a Citizen

1. Submit Your Application (Form N-400)

You’ll complete and submit your citizenship application with the required documents and fees. USCIS may ask for additional information during this stage.

2. Attend Your Biometrics Appointment

You’ll be scheduled for fingerprinting, a photo, and a signature to verify your identity.

3. Complete Your Interview and Test

USCIS will invite you to an interview with an officer. You’ll take an English and civics test and answer questions about your background.

4. Take the Oath of Allegiance

Once your application is approved, you’ll attend a citizenship ceremony and take the Oath of Allegiance — officially becoming a U.S. citizen.

Special Circumstances

Some applicants may qualify for exceptions or waivers, including those with:

  • Military service
  • Disabilities
  • Other unique situations

Our firm helps you determine if any special rules apply to your case.
