B-1 and B-2:

Non-Immigrant Visa for Traveling

for Business or Pleasure

The B-1 visa and B-2 visa are temporary, non-immigrant visas that allow the holder to travel to the United States for either business or tourism purposes.  They may be used for single or multiple entry.

A B-1 can be used for some of the following purposes: 

  • Consult with business associates

  • Attend a scientific, educational, professional, or business convention or conference

  • Settle an estate

  • Negotiate a contract

A B-2 can be used for some of the following purposes: 

  • Tourism

  • Vacation (holiday)

  • Visit with friends or relatives

  • Medical treatment

  • Participation in social events hosted by fraternal, social, or service organizations

  • Participation by amateurs in musical, sports, or similar events or contests, if not being paid for participating

  • Enrollment in a short recreational course of study, not for credit toward a degree
